Cooking is an Act of Love

"Cooking is an act of love" - Massimo Bottura

Cooking is an Act of Love is an initiative by Food for Soul, the non-profit organization founded by Chef Massimo Bottura and his wife Lara Gilmore to build a more sustainable planet by reducing food waste and encouraging social inclusion.

Today, 1.3 billion tons, about 1/3 of food produced, gets lost or wasted, while globally over 800 million people are hungry, don’t have access to fresh food, a home to cook or a table to enjoy a meal. At the same time, social isolation is an increasing public health threat. Not having access to healthy food creates inequalities and social vulnerability, it’s so much more than just about the waste of resources. To make a cultural revolution we should learn to see and appreciate the value of food. Only by doing that, we will stop wasting it.

At Food for Soul, we believe that Cooking is an Act of Love, for People and Planet. This Call to Act brings us all together, because our greatest potential lies in joining forces.

Food for Soul is a non-profit organization founded by chef Massimo Bottura and Lara Gilmore to shine light on and to invest in the invisible potential of people, places and food. By doing that, the organization aims to build a culture of value that will strengthen community resilience, open opportunities for social and economic mobility and build healthier and more equitable food systems. So far, Food for Soul has opened seven Refettorio projects around the world - community spaces where people are invited to connect around a meal and rediscover the value of food surplus and human connections.

With over twenty years of experience helming his three-Michelin-star restaurant Osteria Francescana, and thanks to his innovative energy, social sensitivity and understanding of the power of human connections, chef Massimo Bottura is considered one of the world’s leading culinary figures. In 2015, Massimo decided to apply his creative energy to the issues of food waste and social isolation, and dedicate himself to the development of community projects. Massimo confirmed his dedication to empower local communities around the world to create social and cultural change when he founded Food for Soul in early 2016.
